2007-08 Seattle Seahawks
Expectations are high for a comeback season for Seattle. They are injury free and focused, and the team is a solid mix of seasoned vets like Walter Jones - the best offensive lineman in the entire NFL - and younger and faster players like Chris Spencer, Sean Locklear and Rob Sims. This makes for a well executed offence, which will be better with Deion Branch back next season. The Seahawk defense is not as great, with a definite lack of pass rush. However, the do have the corners and safeties to keep up. They will need strong QB skills from Matt Hasselbeck to stop rival teams, with some help from Shaun Alexander, who’s proven to be a great player. It’s fair to say that Seahawks ticket buyers can expect great plays this season. All the elements are there.
Previous Seasons
In the off-season, the Seattle Seahawks went out and picked up a number of free agents to help their team take another step closer to the Super Bowl. The team picked up a number of defensive free agents to help patch up the holes in their team. They signed cornerback Andre Dyson to help out a defense that wasn’t exactly scaring opposing quarterbacks and receivers. They also went out and got linebacker Jamie Sharper, after he was released by the Houston Texans, who led his team in tackles last season with 137 take downs. These two players will definitely bring an intensity to the defense that had been missing the past couple of seasons.
The Seahawks also signed wide receiver Joe Jurevicius to help out their receiving corps. Last season, they had a great deal of trouble with receivers dropping passes and he was brought in to be Mr. Surehands.
The draft was the other place where the Seahawks could go out and fill some holes that had been gaping for quite a while. The team needs some help on the offensive line and they found it with two of their first five picks. With their first selection they grabbed Mississippi center Chris Spencer. Spencer is the type of center that is a great athlete. He can get to the second level quickly and has a good leg drive needed to throw around the big nose tackles that he will be facing this season. He should be challenging for playing time immediately. The other offensive lineman they got was Florida State right tackle Ray Willis. Willis is a mammoth of a man and measures at 6’6” and 327 lbs. He is a very powerful right tackle who shows good speed off the ball and can get to the speed rushing defensive ends without much of a problem. He will be the right tackle of the future for the Seahawks and he could end up being one of the better picks the team made this year.
The offense is undeniably strong. The team is led by all-world running back Shaun Alexander. He gave the team a scare in the off-season when he was holding out, but the two sides hammered home a new contract and he will be among the leagues elite once again this season. Under center is Matt Hasselbeck. He was billed to be the next Brett Favre under his coach Mike Holmgren, but he hasn’t realized all the potential that he has. This could also be attributed to the ludicrous amount of passes that have been dropped in the past two seasons, but the other half lies directly on his shoulders. He has been pegged to be a breakout player for the past three years and is moving into a class where people are expecting him to be mediocre year in and year out.
